Artist: Jennifer Carwile
Jennifer Carwile, owner of Kelwood Contemporary Art in Baton Rouge, is a painter and sculptor working with oil paint, wood, and metal. The subject matter that appears in my work most often is water. My first experience with the ocean was in college when I studied abroad in Brighton, England. The continuous movement and power of the waves intrigued me, especially after visiting the beach to take photos and being physically knocked over by an approaching wave. Now, having lived in Louisiana for 20 years, I have a greater appreciation for the complex relationship between man and water. I spend my vacations enjoying the beach and my autumns preparing for hurricanes. My work explores the paradoxes of water- it is both the essence of livelihood and the source of destruction; hypnotically tranquil and powerfully fierce.
