Completion of a plein air painting begun earlier this week. Working on building up transparent layers into opaque values of shade and shadows. I had not intended to work on faces this much but more on creating impressionistic figures. The process just kept going and I was able to correct areas where the graphite showed through the pigment and also explore changing the facial characteristics and expressions. The result is a mix of transparency with opaque features in both the pool water and the figures too. Painting opaque faces which is what is so great about gouache. If the faces appear inaccurate then just let it dry and try again. A great way to beat the summer heat here in Austin by swimming and painting en plein air, then finishing by painting in the comfort of plein air conditioning!
