André Romijn: Capturing the essence of femininity in oil paintings
Message-
Artist: Gisele Belleud (French, 1921-2019)
Gisele Belleud (1921 - 2019) was a French painter and illustrator, born in Le Cannet in 1921. When she was sixteen years old she met and formed a bond with artist Pierre Bonnard. She was his model for many years and also his student, she was only twenty six when Pierre Bonnard died. As a young designer she used the lessons she had been taught by him to create her original works of art.
If she knows how to be a talented landscape painter inspired by the lights of the South, Giselle Belleud has made women her main subject of inspiration. She declines it in portrait, in group, in nudes and one recognizes her touch with the serious interiority of the faces. The emotions conveyed always turn out to be important and essential, beyond the refinement of the touch and the ethereal composition.
Gisèle Belleud died in November 2019, just after celebrating her 98th birthday.
