This painting is representative of the migration of artists to Brazil following WWII. It was inspired by an NYT article, " A Small Brazilian Photo Club that Reached for the Skyline - How a group of mostly photographers helped develop Brazil's modernist aesthetic". Dozens of artists had left Europe fleeing fascism, and Brazil's government was ready to support ambitious cultural undertakings. The artists brought an enthusiasm for modern art and photography. My inspiration was a photo that accompanied the article, German Lorca's "Solarized Portrait" (Retrato Solarizado), circa 1953.
