This painting was inspired by the NYT's article "A Dancer and Questions of Color". Choe Lopes Gomes, who is Black says she was told to use whitening makeup for her roles in Swan Lake, Giselle and La Bayadere. She is French and the only black ballerina at the Staatsballett Berlin.
