I found the article of Marcus Leatherdale, the photographer in the NYT's obituaries. He made classical portraits in the 80's of Andy Warhol, Madonna, Robert Mapplethorpe and lesser known subjects pushing in terms of gender and sexuality. By the 90's he was photographing almost exclusively in India with the same elegant classical manner he did in New York City. Later he began to document the Adivasis tribes, a far-flung minority population. "I want to preserve the tradition of these proud people as best I can, somewhat like Edward Curtis did the the American Indians". The photo was taken in 1998 and this is my interpretation of his pose and expression.
