South Carolina is lucky to have a great statewide free to use Rails to Trails system with 500 miles of cross-state hiking and bicycling paths beside lakes, across mountain ridges, through forests, into towns big and small, and across swamps. While you can do any section in any order, the official start (or end) to the trail is at the Intracoastal Waterway in Awendaw (just north of Charleston SC). My husband and I are slowly working our way through hiking the trail. This beautiful scene greeted us in Awendaw when we did this first segment on the trail.
