An intimate capture of the inland ponds and environs with the composition reinforced by the grain and colour of the torrefied maple panel.
PANEL PAINTINGS
Houston approaches material as a catalyst to composition by carefully selecting torrefied* maple or baltic birch pales that evoke the image to be captured. The grain and movement of the wood informs the painting; acrylic, archival inks, graphite and the painted colour of the warm maple or baltic birch created the composition and colouring, a lyrical approach to capturing the essence of place.
*Torrefaction is a drying process that stabilizes wood, removing moisture; leaving warm tones + smokey scent, a material of choice for musical instruments.
