Message
Barbara Davies is an oil painter of landscapes and still life based in San Diego, California. She received her education at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she focused on photography. Upon graduation, Davies moved to New York City where she apprenticed with noted photographer Irving Penn and later moved to a career in advertising in New York City and Boston.
Davies began her fine art painting career after a permanent move to San Diego in 2001. She was inspired by the beauty of the California coast and wanted to explore color, light and form in her new medium of oil paint.
Davies, an award-winning artist, has studied with California impressionists, Catherine Grawin, Mark Kerckhoff, Jeff Yeoman and Toni Williams among many others. She is an artist member of the California Art Club, Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild and the San Diego Art Guild and exhibits regularly at regional and local art shows: ArtWalk, Del Mar Fair and smaller “pop-up” events.
Davies’ paintings are found in collections across the U.S., and abroad.

Statement
I’ve always been a lover of the great outdoors and the beauty that nature has to offer. I have a strong emotional connection to color and am drawn to the interplay of light and shadow. One of my earliest childhood memories is finger-painting in kindergarten and sprinkling brightly colored powders onto my creations. I still have a few of these pieces to remind me of the joy of mixing colors. I’m a colorist at heart.
Upon moving to San Diego in 2001, I was awe-struck by the vibrant colors, light, scale and beauty of Southern California and started painting with oils. My passion is painting large canvases, in vibrant oil colors representative of the California coast and deserts.
Nature has always been my guide and painting is my affirmation of the beauty of life all around us. Sharing my vision with others who see that same beauty is my gift back to our human connectedness and to nature… that which we love, we need to celebrate and protect.
