Barbara Danzi is a Los Angeles-based artist who makes large-scale improvisational abstract quilts.
MessageGeometric abstraction evoking a rainbow that has been deconstructed. The artwork is an abstract composition featuring bold, curved shapes and vibrant colors. Dominating the lower portion of the piece is a large, rounded orange form bordered by a black crescent and a dark blue segment. Above this, there is a bright yellow semicircle contrasted against a blue shape on the left side. A prominent red arc stretches across the middle, intersecting with dark blue and gray forms. The background is divided into sections of brown on the left and beige on the right, providing a neutral frame that enhances the vividness of the central shapes. The textured surface adds depth to the smooth, solid colors, emphasizing the geometric abstraction of the artwork.
After hand cutting pieces of solid colored fabric, designing the composition, and sewing the pieces together I layered the quilt top with cotton batting and stitched many closely-spaced lines through the layers to add texture. This is called matchstick quilting.
