Barbara Danzi is a Los Angeles-based artist who makes large-scale improvisational abstract quilts.
MessageGeometric abstraction evokes a rainbow that has been deconstructed. This art quilt features bold, curved shapes in vibrant colors set against a black textured background. A large red shape dominates the right side, bending into a form reminiscent of a wide arc. On the left side, three other curved bands in blue, orange, and yellow interweave and extend outward, adding dynamic movement and contrast to the composition. The use of vivid colors and clean, sweeping lines creates a striking and energetic abstract design.
After hand cutting pieces of solid colored fabric, designing the composition, and sewing the pieces together I layered the quilt top with cotton batting and stitched many closely-spaced lines through the layers to add texture. This is called matchstick quilting.
