Barbara Danzi is a Los Angeles-based artist who makes large-scale improvisational abstract quilts.
MessageLarge geometric shapes join blocks in bold colors in this abstract art quilt composition. Large blocks of red, pink, blue, orange, green, brown, and yellow intersect and overlap, creating a dynamic and balanced arrangement. The textured surface adds depth, while the placement of shapes generates movement across the quilt. The use of contrasting colors emphasizes the distinct forms, producing a lively and engaging piece.
After hand cutting pieces of solid colored fabric, designing the composition, and sewing the pieces together I layered the quilt top with cotton batting and stitched many closely-spaced lines through the layers to add texture. This is called matchstick quilting.
