Painting the traditional west alive today North of the boarder.
Message'Lined Up' is an original oil painting of Jason Woolsey, a cowboy I worked with at the Gang Ranch. Jason came to the Gang as a city kid from Vancouver with little to no riding experience and no cowboying experience, but he wanted to try the cowboy life. Within a few short years he became a great hand and went on to become the Cowboss at the Gang for a number of years.
The Cowboss is the foreman of the cowboy crew on a large operation and is responsible for both the crew and the cows as they calve, brand, turnout, wean, gather, and stray hunt throughout the year. This is no easy task at a large operation like the Gang Ranch. The Gang is in one of the most rugged areas of Canada and the range is 1 million acres.
This piece is a colour study for a larger work to be completed at a later date. I use these smaller colour studies as an elaborate sketch planning out the composition of the larger piece. The colour studies are done with very loose brushwork and little detail as I experiment with the lighting, direction of the brushwork and colours of the composition. I really enjoy doing these colour studies as they are a good mental break for me from my higher detailed work.
