Artist: Soe Soe
Soe Soe was born in 1967 in Laputta, in Myanmar’s Ayeyarwady Division, into a family where music and movement were everyday rhythms—his father a pianist and his mother a traditional dancer. At the age of 18 he pledged himself wholly to art, stepping into the life of a full-time painter.
His works are a celebration of light and texture—he uses vibrant jewel-tones to capture the sun-dappled rice-terraces of northern Myanmar and the shimmering rain-washed streets of Yangon. In a bold move of technique, he at times applies paint via syringe, giving his canvases a dimensionality that seems to lift off the surface.
Over the years, Soe Soe’s art has travelled far beyond his homeland, including exhibitions in Belgium, the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore and the USA—marking him as one of Myanmar’s voice in contemporary art.
In Soe Soe’s own words, painting is not a burden but a companion that brings him lasting joy—a reminder that for him the act of creation is as vital as the image it yields.
