Over the years I’ve been fascinated with the ways that the look of stained glass can show up in the natural world. I’d spent a number of years doing painted explorations of Tiffany stained glass in an effort to understand how to recreate the look of it in paint. When I moved on to painting other subjects I found myself drawn to the way that nature could also emulate that similar colour, glow and fragility found in the glass.
In this painting I sought to capture the stained glass quality of the leaves and petals of this clematis growing on my garden patio as they are lit up by the sun.
