I’ve spent so many years studying the look of stained glass that I feel like I see it everywhere now. This is especially true when I am looking at the natural world. I love the way that sunlight illuminates leaves as it passes through them creating the appearance of little shards of stained glass. This effect is even more striking in the fall when the leaves take on such vibrant colours.
In this painting, I wanted to play with that awe-inspiring and ethereal quality of the light. This may have been just a little green belt between Memorial Drive and the Bow River, but on the day it took my breath away.
