This map is representative of some of the significant sites associated with Jain temple architecture. Since our goal was to present a holistic picture of the historical development, richness and diversity of Jain art and architecture that would also highlight the deep connection between art, ritual, and material culture, we chose sites across India and Pakistan that would help make these connections through their visual imagery. Keeping the scope of the project in mind, not all sites could be included. However, in order to represent the diverse traditions within the two main Jain sects we decided to adopt a chronological and regional approach as the sectional titles indicate. Since the Jains are now a global presence, representations of their material culture as it takes shape outside India has also been considered and a small section is dedicated to the temples serving the Jain diaspora.
