This sculpture evolved on its own without drawing or preliminary concept. It started with sculpting the scrolling arch at the top, which I then added to the head. I created an armature core of the torso in foam and covered it in layers of cement. I then added the crown and finally the cloak with all of the tessera detail. The tiled surface is made of cast “tessera” parts from other molds of my sculptures. These are all images I carved, then molded previously, for other works. I cast fragments to be used like mosaic, to cover the torso. As I constructed the work, the meanings emerged, and I realized their importance to me. The character is an allegorical boy king like a Pharaoh, but he could be any of us. The scrolling arch at the top of his head is a metaphysical or quantum connection to Eternity, to the Universe. The crown around his head represents Expansion. The cloak is the memory of life experiences. The rectangular tiles along his shoulders is like a calendar; Time and the passing days. What emerged to me from this work was a representation of how I view my life and the mystery of existence.
