The Outside the Box Project was initiated in 2016 and utilizes art to combat graffiti. Traffic Boxes made up 70 percent of graffiti incidents. The cost of redesigning a traffic box is far less than the amount utilized to remove graffiti multiple times throughout the years. These public art projects not only help save city funds, but they also help build a sense of community ownership and support artists, many of whom are local residents.
Close to half of this project was funded by an SCFD grant awarded to the Thornton Arts, Sciences and Humanities Council (TASHCO). The TASHCO Funds Balance paid for the remaining amount.
About the artist: Casper explains, "My mission is to cultivate joy and vitality by connecting people to each other and to the land where we live work and play. I seek to create a bridge between seemingly disparate concepts like nature & technology, science & spirituality, order & chaos. I am fascinated by the botanical treasures of our world & utterly convinced that plants will save us from ourselves if we can re-plug into their magic. I create my pieces with a combination of hi-tech tools & by hand. I love bright colors & the boldness of black & white. I enjoy investigating the space between known and unknown dimensions and creating intrigue for multiple senses simultaneously. I’m obsessed with patterns & repetitions of form, particularly when they are geometrically structured & organically patterned.
