Luba Zygarewicz (Chilean-Ukranian) x
Born in Chile in 1965, Luba Zygarewicz grew up in Bolivia, and moved to San Francisco at the age of 15. She has lived and worked as an artist and teacher in the New Orleans area since 1997. Zygarewicz received her BA in Visual Arts from Loyola University New Orleans and her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Zygarewicz is a mother of four and home-schooled her children for 16 years.
Words are an integral part of her sculptures and installations. A large aspect of her process is the accumulation of elements over time, as she works daily with mundane materials, such as hair, lint, tea, twigs, and paper. Her work is informed by the fragmentation of physical presence in this tech driven age, social issues, and the tensions as a woman to be a wife, a mother, an artist, and a teacher.
Zygarewicz has received awards and recognition for her work. She recently participated in “GULF COAST Artists”, Rockport Center for the Arts, Rockport, Texas; "Louisiana Contemporary", Ogden Museum; “a thousand threads”, Solo Installation, CAC; “Brother, Can You Spare a Day“, Staple Goods; “NOLA NOW Part I: Swagger for a Lost Magnificence”, CAC; “thread”, AcA, Lafayette, LA; “Southern Open 2011”, AcA.
