I cannot remember a time when there weren’t cameras around me. My father and grandmother were prolific photographers of life and travel. I received my first camera around age 10, and I haven’t stopped snapping.
I was raised in Tuscaloosa (Roll Tide!) and have lived all over North Alabama. I was married to Larry Stephens, a United Methodist minister until he died in 2013. In that role, our family served in several areas where I learned to appreciate the unique inhabitants and relaxed pace of small towns in the rural South. I also began to recognize the sacredness of everyday life and the sometimes-overlooked scene.
As Earl and I were getting acquainted, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that we share a love of photography. Over the last seven years, we have explored, learned, and created while traveling around the United States. In 2021, we completed the Summer Intensive Program at Rocky Mountain School of Photography.
My approach to photography is to look for what often goes unnoticed, such as light coming through the fence, reflections in old windows, life in dilapidated homes and businesses, ordinary backyards, and finding the holy and beautiful in the mundane.
We were fortunate to meet Melissa Lawson while I was working at Huntsville Hospital. The opportunity to share my photography with the world is a dream come true, especially since it’s happening here in this hospital. Our first display is on 3W, the cardiac floor where I once worked and where my late husband spent his last days. Significantly, my images hang in a special space for my family and me.
It has been a privilege to work with Melissa and the Arts in Medicine program. I am so grateful to be allowed to share my art with patients and visitors. My prayer is that it brings sacredness and light to your day.
