Earning his Oats is a sculpture by Martha Pettigrew which depicts a draft horse in harness pulling a load up an incline. Draft horses are large and powerful animals well-suited for hauling heavy loads and plowing fields. They are also known for their calm and patient demeanors. Belgians, Clydesdales, and Percherons are some of the common breeds of draft horses.

Martha Pettigrew is a prominent Western contemporary sculptor. Martha graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She is the recipient of many prestigious awards including Best of Show at the Western Spirit Art Show at the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum. Her work has been accepted in prestigious exhibitions and her sculptures are sought after by institutions, corporations, privately-funded sculpture gardens, and many private collectors.

Earning his Oats was sponsored by Tara Nethercott, an attorney currently serving as a Wyoming State Senator from Laramie County. Tara, a partner in the firm of Crowley/Fleck, PLLP, remarked that the horse climbing uphill recalls for her the persistence and tenacity required in her litigation practice. She donated the state to honor her parents Jim and Judy Nethercott.
