June 1, 2026 - June 30, 2027
'The Whirling World' is a multi-screen video projection mural by Brooklyn, NY-based artist Sean Capone. The work is composed of several interconnected, graphically vibrant scenes created using both algorithmic and hand-drawn digital animation techniques. It draws upon themes and motifs which the artist has explored for many years: geometric abstraction, architectural ornamentation, floral art and cosmic imagery, rendered through a contemporary lens of generative digital art processes and presented as an immersive, nonnarrative visual experience. The main motifs in the animations include spiral forms, concentric circles, and biomorphic patterns blossoming and radiating with musical energy. Together, they constitute a kind of “generative formal cosmos of whirling forces,” inspired by the aesthetic philosophy of Swiss Bauhaus artist Paul Klee.
'The Whirling World' constitutes the largest-scale experiential work yet for the artist, who has worked for over twenty years as a video artist creating moving-image activations within public space and the built environment. The installation serves as a welcoming point for visitors to Minneapolis, encouraging a sense of wonder and interconnection between the human, natural, and technological worlds which we move through in our daily lives.
