- Carol Hancuh
- The Voting Line
MSP Terminal 1, Concourse C Art Gallery
July 10, 2024 - November 7, 2024
This arrangement of 25 life-sized quilted figures by Minnesota-based Artist Carol Hancuh depicts strangers from all walks of life waiting calmly to fulfill their civic duty. Each figure is meticulously hand-stitched and assembled after the likeness of real people and a few characters of Carol’s invention. Mixed in with the crowd are two U.S. historical figures whose work expanded voting rights.
Through soft expressions and candid poses, the voters appear neighborly and approachable. They constitute a community of both friends and strangers, inviting audiences to reflect with kindness on the differences we each bring to the voting booth. In Carol’s words, “The Voting Line depicts a cross-section of humankind, some anxious, some bored, some oblivious of their surroundings, but all there for one reason: To vote."
About the Artist
Carol Hancuh is a textile artist whose career began with acrylics, pen and ink, and watercolors. She was introduced to quilting in 2011, and in 2013 she attended a workshop on textile fusing in Tuscany, which, according to Carol, “Opened up a whole new dimension in quilting for me. From then on, the challenge has been finding those faces hidden within batiks.” Her focus is personal expression and creative exploration by building stories in quilts and using human images to trigger responses. Her quilt, “Feed my People” was aimed at awareness of hunger and homelessness in America. Her previous series called “Bus Stop” includes eleven separate individuals in eleven different quilts brought together at a local bus stop.
Carol is a member of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) which promotes art quilts, educates, serves as a forum for professional development, and acts as a resource for various entities.
