MSP Terminal 2, Gate H10 (Men's Restroom)
This wintry scene was inspired by the stunning show of northern lights on a bitterly cold, but gorgeous Minnesota night. Step into the drifted snow and you can almost hear the yelp of eager sled dogs and see their hot breath. Can you find the small, silver dog bone hidden within the mural?
Today, the mystery of the aurora borealis (northern lights) is not so mysterious. When charged particles from the sun strike air molecules in the Earth's magnetic field, they cause the atoms within those molecules to become excited. The molecules give off light as they calm down. Oxygen emits the electric green. Nitrogen manifests in blue, red or violet colors.
Just as the lights are comprised of infinite particles, this mosaic is made from thousands of pieces, each individually placed by the artist, and most cut by hand.
