MSP Terminal 2, Gate H10 (Women's Restroom)
Today, the mystery of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) is not so mysterious. When charged particles from the sun strike air molecules in Earth's magnetic field, they cause the atoms within those molecules to become excited. Who wouldn't? The molecules give off light as they calm down. Oxygen emits the electric green. Nitrogen manifests in blue, red or violet colors.
It's not the science, but the sheer ethereal wonder of the Northern Lights that inspired this serene summer scene, quietly admired by two common loons - the state bird of Minnesota.
Just as the lights are comprised of infinite particles, this mosaic mural is made from thousands of pieces, each individually placed by the artist, and most cut by hand.
