Artist Bio — Steve Dunn, Western Bronze Sculptor
Steve Dunn creates bronze sculptures that honor the backbone of America—the cowboys, Native peoples, and wildlife that shaped the rugged spirit of the West. His work carries the grit of lived experience, the reverence of memory, and the pride of a disappearing culture he’s determined to preserve.
Raised in Oklahoma, Steve grew up surrounded by the rhythms of horse work, ranch hands, and Native American heritage. These early influences left a mark that never faded. Even after serving in the military, spending twenty-six years as a firefighter in Oklahoma City, and later working sixteen demanding years in the oil field, the stories and figures of the West stayed with him. They are the subjects he returns to again and again—men who earned their lives by grit, instinct, and raw courage.
Steve began sculpting two decades ago after a friend nudged him into a workshop in Kerrville, Texas. The artform took hold instantly. Sculpting became a way to honor the people and places that shaped him. Life pulled him away for a season, but after retirement he returned to the studio with a renewed determination. Over the past six years, he has rebuilt his artistic practice with focus and fire, combining memory, photography, and lived experience to bring each bronze to life.
Working primarily in one- to two-foot bronzes, Steve captures the tension, motion, and dignity of the West—cowboys pushing through wind and dust, Native American riders in quiet command, longhorns and mustangs with the alert posture of survival. Each piece is part tribute, part storytelling, and part historical record. His sculptures invite viewers to feel a sense of history and legacy, as though they’re standing in the presence of something that refuses to be forgotten.
Based in the small town of Sherman, Texas, Steve maintains a growing body of work with more than a dozen finished pieces available for collectors. His bronzes have been represented in regional galleries, including Southwest Art Gallery in Dallas and Sparrow Gallery in Denison/Sherman. While he continues to create collectible mid-scale bronzes, his vision reaches further—toward large-scale public installations that will carry the Western legacy forward for future generations.
For Steve Dunn, sculpting isn’t just art. It’s preservation. It’s tribute. It’s patriotism. And it’s his way of ensuring the West—its people, its wildlife, its grit—endures in bronze long after the dust settles.
