Stunning portrait of a 40 year old Yves Saint Laurent, with his beloved chihuahua Hazel. Newton knew him intimately and has caught his hawk-like stare brilliantly.
Yves Saint Laurent (1936-2008) was a pioneering French fashion designer who revolutionized the industry. Born in Oran, Algeria, he moved to Paris to pursue fashion design and gained recognition by winning a design contest at 17. He became Christian Dior's protégé and, aged only 21, he took over as head of Dior. In 1962, he founded his own eponymous fashion house, introducing iconic styles like the tuxedo suit for women ("Le Smoking"). He popularized women's trousers and made fashion more accessible with ready-to-wear lines and his work continues to influence fashion today.
This is a genuine vintage 11"x14" photogravure from 1985, archivally matted to 16" x 20" in a spectacular vintage heavy gold solid wood frame.
