In 1923, Weston moved to Mexico with Tina Modotti and in 1925 they were commissioned to take images for an upcoming book on Mexican art. Whilst taking closeup pictures of the ever-changing pulquería murals he stepped back and created this iconic image, the most popular of all the photographs he took in Mexico. As such we can take in the overall scene that includes not only the mural, but a wider span of the pulquería with a man who is resting at a second-floor window tending to his bird cages, offset by a sleeping man seated in the opposite corner. The photograph moves beyond the assignment to document the impermanent murals and captures the time and place of a vibrant and dynamic city. This superb photograph was taken in 1926 and has the warm tones and fantastic tonal range of a rich platinum print.
A genuine vintage photogravure, printed in 1933. Archivally mounted on 100% acid-free board and in a 11"x14" black frame.
