Stunning 1881 photograph of the Castle Garth in Newcastle showing the Black Gate, the spire of St Nicholas Cathedral (now Newcastle Cathedral) and the Dog Leap Stairs. Sawyer was especially drawn to this spot (still recognisable today) and took several pictures over the years of which this is the most famous.
At least seven people are clearly visible in the image. On the left, a beggar with no legs sits at the side of the road, with a lady standing outside a shop behind her. In the cobblestone street a peddler sits on his handcart while he chats to an old woman with a huge bundle on her back. Meanwhile at the right, by the base of the Dog Leap Stairs, sits a woman, bare foot extended, with an infant in her lap and a toddler by her side. Only the baby seems to be aware of Sawyer, probably standing with his camera on a raised platform as he captures this moment.
This is a genuine vintage photogravure, printed in 1972. Archivally mounted on 100% acid-free board in an 8"x10" black wooden frame.
