Full title "The antique dealer's windows, Beijing, China 1965". One of Riboud's most famous works, this was taken in Liulichan Street in 1965. In similar fashion to Doisneau's series of images from inside an art gallery in Paris, Riboud has set up inside an antique shop in Peking's old quarters focusing on the people outside. In this extraordinary print, each window pane contains a little world within a world.
“This scene has been photographed in old Peking through the window of a shop in Liu Li Chang, the street long famous for its art and antique shops. The gold-lettered name of this shop means “prosperity.” Private citizens come here to sell family jewels or other objects. The prices are fixed by the government. It is early summer and people live in the streets at this time. That's why you see women and old men and playing children. And in the crowded streets it is very difficult to take pictures without everybody looking at you. When you keep walking, people are all around you, and as soon as you have your camera out, they gather around you.” (Marc Riboud)
