- Portrait of Le Corbusier 1937, 1937

One of Andre's series of portraits from the late 1930's which broke the mold of the "celebrity portrait". Rather than the subjects turning up in the photographer's studio to formally pose, she went to them and captured iconic images of the greatest creative geniuses of the day, including Picasso, Kertetz, Cocteau, Giacometti, Mondrian and many others.
Here she has captured a smiling Le Corbusier in his Paris offices in 1937. Aged 50, he was in his prime little knowing that due to the war he wouldn't complete another project for another decade...
Le Corbusier (born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret in 1887) was one of the most influential architects and urban planners of the twentieth century, and a seminal figure in the modern movement as a painter, designer, and writer. A naturalized French citizen of Swiss origins, as of 1917 Le Corbusier lived and worked primarily in Paris, but his practice was international in scope. The architect’s involvement in the development and history of Cubism was twofold: as a practitioner and theorist of Purism and as an art advisor and architect to the Swiss banker and collector Raoul La Roche. Le Corbusier’s personal art collection included examples of Cubist works by Georges Braque and Picasso.
This is a genuine vintage photogravure, printed in Paris in 1937. Archivally mounted on 100% acid-free board and matted in a 14"x11" black wooden frame.
