Artist: Rogi Andre (French, 1905-1970)
Rogi André was a Hungarian-born French photographer and artist. Born Rozsa Klein in Budapest in 1905 she moved to Paris in 1925. Originally an artist, in 1928 she became the first wife of André Kertész, who encouraged her move into photography and whose name she adopted.
She became one of the finest portrait photographers of the early 20th century, her subjects a who's-who of artistic Paris. Unusually for the period, she insisted in capturing her subjects in their everyday environments which gave her portraits a uniquely relaxed feel. She also worked with and heavily influenced many female photographers including Dora Marr, Florence Henri, Ilse Bing and Lisette Model.
