Artist: Wong Wing Chee
In the 1950s there were in Hong Kong a group of doctors who were enthusiastic photographers; they were known as the "Gang of Doctors". The group comprised Wu Kay-hau, Onward Szeto, Wu Hung-tak, Kwan Siu-yee, Li Ching-wah, Lau Po-hei, Lincoln Luk, Li Man-kim, E.W.J. Sun, Siu Ka-hee, K.H. Kung and Wong Wing-chi 黃永志.
The gang also comprised several people who were non-medical: Manly Chin (who was responsible for liaising), Wong Shiu-gun, So Yat-wah and Tong Keng-yee. The "Gang of Doctors" was very influential in Hong Kong art photography, and made significant contributions to photographic societies and international salons.
Wong Wing-chi did well in the Hong Kong Arts Festival photographic exhibitions in the 1950s and 60s: he won a distinction and a bronze plaque in 1957 and 1958. Many of the "Gang of Doctors" - Onward Szeto, Li Ching-wah, So Yat-wah, Wong Shiu-gun, Tong Keng-yee, Li Man-kim, Lau Po-hei, K.H. Kung, Chow Chun-lim, Wu Hung-tak and Siu Ka-hee - were competitors in these events. From their participation it was evident that the Hong Kong Arts Festival photographic exhibition was highly rated by Hong Kong photographers.
