Artist: Steven Campbell (Scottish, 1953-2007)
Steven Campbell (1953–2007) was a Scottish painter and leading figure in the “New Glasgow Boys” movement of the 1980s. Born in Glasgow, he initially worked as an engineer before studying at Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1982. Campbell’s distinctive figurative style combined narrative complexity, surreal symbolism, and literary references, often exploring themes of masculinity, identity, and social ritual. His breakthrough came with exhibitions in New York and London, where his theatrical compositions drew critical acclaim. Despite his relatively short career, Campbell’s work profoundly influenced a new generation of Scottish artists and remains central to contemporary Scottish art.
