Artist: Martin Munkacsi (Hungarian, 1896-1963)
Martin Munkácsi (1896–1963) was a Hungarian-born photographer and photojournalist celebrated for transforming modern photography with his dynamic, spontaneous style. Beginning as a sports journalist in Budapest, he developed a passion for capturing motion and energy, which became his signature. In the 1920s and 1930s, Munkácsi worked in Berlin for publications like Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung, creating striking images of athletes, city life, and celebrities. After emigrating to the United States in 1934, he joined Harper’s Bazaar, pioneering fashion photography that emphasized movement and natural settings. His innovative approach deeply influenced photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Richard Avedon.
