Artist: Karsh (Canadian, 1908-2002)
Yousuf Karsh (1908-2002) was a Canadian photographer of Armenian heritage, renowned for his iconic portraits of influential figures. Escaping the Armenian Genocide, he migrated to Canada in 1924, where he apprenticed under portraitist John Garo. Establishing his studio in Ottawa, Karsh captured the essence of numerous personalities, including Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, and Picasso. His work is characterized by dramatic lighting and masterful composition, highlighting the depth of his subjects. Karsh's legacy is preserved in countless publications and exhibitions, marking him as one of the 20th century's most celebrated portrait photographers. In many cases, our enduring visual memory of many famous people are portraits that he created.
