Artist: Kan Hing Fook 簡慶福 (b. 1921)
Master photographer Kan Hing-fook studied sculpture with Zhang Chongren and painting with Liu Haisu at the Shanghai Fine Art Academy in the 1940s. His interest in photography dates back to 1939 when he acquired a Leica - a camera which was to lure him into a life-long addiction to photography.
When he moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong in 1948, local photographers mistook Kan Hing-fook as a "Shanghai boy". As a matter of fact, he is a native of Zhongshan, Guangdong province. Kan Hing-fook produced a series of masterpieces including "Hermitage", "Water Palette" and "Soaring Wings" in 1951 - 56. He won the Hong Kong Salon's gold medal in two consecutive years, and more than a hundred gold, silver and bronze medals. For several years he was among the world's top ten photographers, and was awarded many titles by the world's most prestigious photographic bodies. His celebrity is truly worldwide.
Kan Hing-fook takes infinite pains with his photographs and no setback could deflect him from his purpose. He derived equal pleasure from the process of making a good photograph and having a good photograph in his hand. In pursuit of a good picture, he had fallen and injured his back, overturned his car, suffered cold and hunger and gone away empty-handed - all without a word of complaint. Mental agility, dignity, candour and sincerity - all these qualities are amply evident in his work.
"The manner of a master" is not something which one can ascribe to oneself, but has to be felt by others and attributed by them. A master is someone who is so broad-minded that he is like "an ocean into which a hundred streams flow". Kan Hing-fook's attainment in photography, generosity of spirit, concern for others and, above all, his distinctive aura command respect from all who know him.
