Artist: Julius Schmidt-Felling (German, 1835-1920)
Julius Paul Schmidt-Felling was a German sculptor best known for his Art Nouveau statues. He demonstrated an affinity for a wide range of subjects, including athletes, mythological warriors, nudes, peasant workers, and playful children. These works were mostly cast in bronze, but later in his life—during the Art Deco era—Schmidt-Felling incorporated chryselephantine into his oeuvre, a technique popularly employed by fellow German sculptors Ferdinand Preiss and Franz Iffland. Born in 1835 in Berlin, Germany, little is known about the artist’s early life. He was highly productive and often employed the Aktien-Gesellschaft Gladenbeck Foundry in Berlin to cast his work. The artist died in 1920 in Germany.
