Gasteazoro was an avid admirer of Ansel Adams and especially the Zone System. After studying in the US (he is a chemist by trade) and living in Carmel in the 1990’s, he began working with large-format cameras. It was when he returned home to central Mexico that he finally mastered the Zone system and put his chemistry to work producing a series of iconic, timeless images of the landscapes and Spanish colonial buildings of his homeland which he then painstakingly hand-printed in platinum.
He had very strong opinions on the platinum process and was very active in the online workgroups resurrecting this “lost art”. His prints are technically superb and, by the very nature of the platinum process and his zone processing, all are unique. His work is in collections globally.
