Artist: John D. Callow (American)
An accomplished sculptor, ceramist and painter, Callow realized he could bring the same physical creation process to his photography by exploring the possibilities offered by different films, papers and development processes in realizing his vision. He calls his photographs “paintings” although, given the shaping, glazing and chemical processes he utilizes in his images, “ceramics” may be more appropriate.
Shooting chromes on the no-longer-produced Kodak “E” emulsions, he used the finest professional archival papers with metallic finishes, cross-processing in c41 with as much as 2-stop pulls. His ability to handle the conflict between chrome and RA4 materials results in stunning colour images which pop off the surface. They have to be seen to be truly appreciated, and by their very nature each print is unique.
