Artist: Ching Eddie
Eddie Ching 程子然 is renowned for his miniature camera photography. He is the nephew of Daisy Ching who was married to Francis Wu, but his style does not reflect either of their influence. In the 1950s and 60s Eddie Ching won many prizes in open competitions and international salon exhibitions. In those days most salon fanatics used 6 x 6 cameras, but Eddie Ching preferred cameras which took 35mm films, the Leica in particular. Also, most photographers aimed to qualify for titles of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain, but Eddie Ching qualified for the master of Leica title of Germany, and he is probably the only Hong Kong photographer to hold this title. All his subjects were drawn from Hong Kong society and life, some scenes of which can no longer be seen today.
With S.Y. Chen, Ma Wing-hung, Harry Lau Cho-chak, L.T. Ko and T.K. Choi, Eddie Ching co-founded the Hong Kong 35mm Photography Society in 1959. He served as vice-chairman of the board in 1959 - 60 and as first salon chairman. Eddie Ching also qualified as associate of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain.
