Artist: Dr Wu K H
When he was about twelve years old, Wu K.H. 鄔圻厚 happened to live next door to the veteran photographer Lucky Che, who infected the child with his enthusiasm for photography. Wu K.H. bought himself a box camera, and began roaming the city for suitable subjects. He became even more actively involved with photography after Lucky Che gave him a twin-lens reflex camera.
In 1937 Wu K.H. enrolled in the University of Hong Kong to study medicine; the years of the Japanese occupation were spent in Chongqing. Upon his return to Hong Kong in 1945, Wu K.H. once again took up photography. He worked in the Tung Wah Hospital before starting his own medical practice in Causeway Bay in 1949.
From 1950 Wu K.H. began to submit photographs to international salons. For twelve consecutive years, from 1956 to 1967, he was among the top ten photographers of the world (in first place five times and second place once in the colour division, and in first place once and second place three times in the monochrome division) - a truly remarkable record. Total prizes won and titles earned are too numerous to be counted.
He was president of Photographic Society of Hong Kong, and one of the founders of the Photographic Salon Exhibitors Association, of which he was president in 1965 - 67 and is honorary president.
