Artist: Wu Daisy
Daisy Wu won first prize in the colour slide division of the competition run by the Popular Photography magazine in 1954. The prize was U.S.$2,500, equivalent to four years' wages earned by a female factory worker in Hong Kong in those days. In winter the same year she went on a speaking tour of the United States. at the invitation of the Photographic Society of America, which also organized a touring exhibition of her works. In 1956 Daisy Wu won first prize in the open competition run by Marshall Photo Oil Co.; the winning entry was a portrait of the film star Li Lihua. The prize was a trip to San Francisco and a gold cup. In June the same year Ilford Company sponsored a solo exhibition of Daisy Wu's photographs.
In addition to her outstanding achievements,
Daisy Wu had a record of service to photographic societies. She became vice-president of the Hong Kong Camera Club in 1966, and was president from 1967 to 1970, probably the first time a woman was elected president of a photographic society in Hong Kong. She was not only a distinguished photographer, but also one who highlighted the achievements of Chinese women photographers in the world.
