Artist: André Kertész (Hungarian, 1894-1985)
André Kertész (1894-1985) was a pioneering Hungarian-born photographer known for his innovative contributions to photographic composition and the photo essay. Born Andor Kertész in Budapest, he began his photographic journey in 1912. After moving to Paris in 1925, he gained recognition for his poetic images of street life. Kertész later emigrated to the United States in 1936, where he continued to work for prestigious magazines and held numerous exhibitions. His work is celebrated for its lyrical and formally rigorous approach, making him one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.
“We all owe something to André Kertész”, Henri-Cartier Bresson once said of the person he considered his teacher and who introduced him to the Leica.
