April Werle is a Filipino American artist and muralist examining how culture is passed down through generations in the diaspora.
MessageApril Werle is a mixed Cebuano American artist and muralist, and the daughter of a Pinay immigrant.
Werle tells stories through the lens of the first American-born Filipino in her family by examining how culture is passed down through generations in the diaspora.
Hands play a significant role in Werle’s work. Amongst many cultural significances, the gesture of amin, or mano po, is a Filipino practice of paying respects to elders through physical touch. The act of amin involves touching the elder’s hand to one’s forehead to receive blessings. By making hands the subjects of her work she recognizes and emphasizes the importance of hands as givers of wisdom.
April Werle is also a cultural advocate. She is passionate about uplifting Filipino and BIPOC communities through art.
Werle serves on the Arts Missoula Board of Directors, has founded the BIPOC Arts Advisory Council, BIPOC Student Mural Program, and has partnered with Filipino American brands and organizations like Filipina American News and Kuyate.
