Anniek Verholt
Anniek's captivating artworks are a result of her ongoing interest and research in the fields of psychology, neuroscience and contemporary art.
MessageAnniek Verholt is a contemporary Dutch artist based in Brighton and Athens. She knew from a young age that she wanted to become an artist. However she also developed an interest in psychology. Anniek decided to combine this with her passion for art and went on to train as an art therapist (BA '00, Hogeschool Leiden). She studied the therapeutic qualities of art and art making and since then continued to practice as a therapist which she still is today. She facilitates therapeutic arts workshops and sessions for organisations and individuals in Brighton and London. Anniek currently runs a therapeutic arts programme promoting rehabilitation in a London prison. Also in this context art is at the core of all communication and facilitates personal expression. Anniek taught abstract art at the Hampstead School of Art in London from 2009 until 2022. She now teaches online.
Her artworks are part of several private collections and exhibited internationally including Hong Kong and Athens. Her main focus is abstract art and installation art. For her installations Anniek often returns to kiln-cast glass techniques. In 2003 she was awarded a scholarship to do an MA Glass at the University of Sunderland (National Glass Centre). This gave her the opportunity to investigate the overlap of two dimensional abstract paintings with three dimensional glass sculpture. Her rich and multi-layered oil paintings, filled with life, are a result of Anniek’s ongoing research into the complexity and beauty of abstract language. Her art installations are of a more conceptual nature focusing on the experience and journey of the beholder.
