Healing Life Elk Mandala

One of my favorite stories (and my favorite mandala). I was bed ridden after a major stomach surgery. I stumbled outside to sit by the river, under a massive pine tree. I heard a noise and turned to find a large elder Bull Elk had followed me and pushed his head through the branches. I was sure he would tilt his head and empale me on his antlers. We sat, me holding my breath and stared in each others eyes. I have never felt so at peace, connected and protected as I did in that moment of sitting silently to hear the earth speak to me through our ancestors and brother elk.

Sit quietly and hear the earth speak, our animal brothers bring their gifts for us when we are able to hear them.
For centuries, Native Americans created medicine wheels and sand mandalas, even their abodes (a tepee) were built around a central point with a circle of life’s needs contained within. These creations capture a moment in time of the rebalancing of the psyche. Seen as a safe refuge to stabilize, integrate and re-order our inner life creating a oneness with the ultimate unity of the infinite circle called life. Mandala artworks bring these healing powers to you.
Connecting to the earth once again empowers the inner truth, what we would perceive as yearnings, distraction, disconnect of what society has determined is our purpose in support of societal goals. As we open our souls to hear what our gift in the universe truly is, we find a balance in our world once again. Each of us is part of a cycle of life on earth, connecting with hundreds of lives, many that we have been convinced have no importance so we ignore their meaning in our path.

What if those lives we bump into everyday were sent to guide us by giving us vision, hope, healing.
That is the gift this Elk gave to me and I hope my artwork will offer this gift to you as well.
