MessageAnne Toovey is an abstract painter based in Ipswich, Queensland. Her practice is grounded in process-led painting, with a focus on surface, light and spatial instability. Works develop through layering, disruption and revision, with no fixed image guiding the outcome.
Her paintings register shifting atmospheric conditions rather than stable forms. Light is used to construct and unsettle depth, producing surfaces that resist immediate resolution.
Toovey returned to painting in 2025 after a career in education and arts management. She holds a Master of Creative Arts (Visual Arts). Her work is developed through sustained studio inquiry and material engagement.
In 2025, she was awarded Best of Show at the Ipswich Art Awards.
Statement
The work is developed without a predetermined image. Each painting emerges through a sequence of material decisions—layering, removal and adjustment—where earlier states remain partially visible.
I am interested in how surface can both hold and disrupt light, and how depth can be constructed without relying on fixed spatial cues. The paintings often sit in a state of partial resolution, where forms are unstable or contingent.
While informed by observation of atmospheric conditions, the work is not descriptive. It operates through accumulation and revision, allowing the image to remain open rather than resolved.
