2024/2025

Recent sold work, but not including my new series, which is under wraps for now ...

2025 Gouache

Some of these gouache works are for sale.

2015, Stay, Commune.1 solo

In 'Stay' I was working with materiality and the painted surface: drips, rubbing out and vertical and horizontal brushwork brings attention to the two dimensionality of the work.

2013, Entangled, Commune.1 solo

For this show, I wrote: "Becoming conscious of nature’s ‘unboundedness’ or ‘unknowability’ reminds us of the conceptual fictions that we live by, and also offers us a way of being comforted by, or delighted by, the potential in the unknown. Shifts in perception must occur to develop new understandings and these slips are evoked, in the paintings, by lines and shapes that are elusive even as they take form.

"In her essay Yonder, Siri Hustveldt describes … "mental spaces [that] map our inner lives more fully than any ‘real’ map, delineating the borders of here and there that also shape what we see in the present.” In 'Entangled', the scapes suggest a richness of this kind of mental space, a landscape of the mind that connects us simultaneously to the past as we go forward into the new. Processes of covering and uncovering, reminiscent of the wash of tide or memory, are visible in remnants of paintwork beneath the surface, while the quality of newness engages the viewer in a transparently subjective attempt to know – or see - afresh."

Much of this seems to relate to what I am doing still.

2012, There but not there, solo, AVA Cape Town

In these paintings I was searching out the marks to fix things that seemed illusive. I think there is a sense of elegy about how I handled the subject – the indigenous riverine forest at Cwebe in the Eastern Cape – that might recall the fragility of natural systems in environmental crisis.

2010, Flow, solo, AVA Cape Town

Although this series of paintings take a real place as a starting point, they are not realistic. I play with the tension between abstracting and representing a place, using what the surface of the painting offers to explore line and colour.
